Abstract
This was a retrospective chart review conducted within a community health-system between January 2015 and June 2017. Patients were included if they were adult patients with a direct ICU admission for AWS (ICD-9 code: 291.81 and/or ICD-10 code: F10.23) that received benzodiazepines or dexmedetomidine for a minimum of 24 hours and had AWS order set implementation within 48 hours of admittance. Patients were excluded if medical management of AWS was started outside of the ICU, they received outpatient benzodiazepines for AWS, or if dexmedetomidine was started greater than 48 hours after ICU AWS order set or benzodiazepine therapy. Patients were also excluded if they received other concomitant continuous sedative infusions other than dexmedetomine (benzodiazepines, propofol, etc.) and if patients in the BZD group received clonidine.
